For insurance intermediaries and financial planners, AI presents unparalleled opportunities for efficiency, personalization, and insight. Nonetheless, this powerful tool arrives with profound ethical implications. Its use must be rigorously governed by the enduring principles of our profession. At its core, the ethical adoption of AI in financial planning is about enhancing, not replacing, the human judgment, empathy, and fiduciary duty that define our client relationships. 1. Anchoring AI in the Financial Planner’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility Our professional compass that embodied in the core tenets of Client First, Integrity, Objectivity, Fairness, Professionalism, Competence, Confidentiality, and Diligence, must remain the supreme authority in the AI era. a. Client First & Integrity: AI models must be deployed to genuinely benefit the client, not merely to reduce costs or increase sales for the intermediary. Algorithmic recommendations must be scrutinized for alignment with client goals, not the provider’s commercial interests. Full transparency about the role and limitations of AI in the advice process is an integrity imperative. b. Objectivity & Fairness: AI systems can perpetuate and amplify societal biases present in their training data, l ead i ng to unfa i r out comes i n risk assessment, product pricing, or recommendat i on eng i nes . Fi nanc i a l planners have a professional duty to understand these r i sks, select tool s designed for fairness, and actively audit output s for d i scr imi natory pat terns , ensuring advice remains objective and equitable. c. Professionalism & Competence: Comp e t e n c e n ow d ema n d s “ t e c h - savviness”, a working understanding of how AI tool function, their strengths, and their weaknesses. Blind reliance on a “black box” algorithm is a breach of professional duty. The professional financial planner is the ultimate analyst and decision-maker. d. Confidentiality & Diligence: Client data is the fuel for AI. Its use must be governed by strict protocols, informed consen t , and r obus t cybe r secu r i t y.
