Year 2023 - Continuing the Legacy 30 Years of Expertise Moving Forward 薪火傳承三十載專業邁向新里程

13 2022 年刊與 2023 展望 YEARBOOK 2022 & PROSPECT 2023 專題探討 FEATURE HKCII 30 th Anniversary 7 September 1993 was the date! The founding of the Hong Kong Chamber of Insurance Intermediaries. Conceived with the mission of bringing under one umbrella Brokers and Agents selling General insurance and/or Life insurance. Some of our esteemed colleagues that were there at the inception were (in alphabetical order) Ricky Chu, Kenneth Hong, Johnson Lee, Geoffrey Lung, Greg So and so on – with apologies to those whose names I have omitted and might have been included. Then the penetration of life assurance in Hong Kong would have been around 20%. Thus began the work and journey of the passionate team that formed the HK CII. Firstly there was the never ending task of Harmonizing and balancing the needs of the three parties that make up the insurance world, that is our Clients, that Insurance Companies and ourselves, the Distributors. To be effective in our role we had to learn and absorb inwards learning and the Know-how eco-system which is a journey within itself across a broad range of insurance related disciplines and faculties. At the Centre of our world is the Concern shown towards our Clients needs (but not necessarily wants). The paramount characteristic in out make-up had to be Integrity , without which rust and decay would bring down what we were building. Finally, there is the force of the powerful need to disseminate Information to the people and corporates that we connect with in our efforts of distribution of insurance products and service to those that buy. So here we have Harmony, Knowledge, Concern, Integrity, Information and the HKCII! Since this founding date there have been six people appointed as Commissioners of Insurance, and under which the insurance industry flourished. Today the HKCII has traversed six appointments of the Commissioner of Insurance. We now operate under the regime of an independent Insurance Authority. Market penetration is approaching 200% (inclusive of Mainland Chinese Lives). But is our work complete? No must be the answer as we look forward to the challenges of the HKCII’s next 30 years.
